Christmas letter

So, I realize we haven't posted in a while. Brad and I have been crazy busy- birthdays, finals, graduation, family visits, and xmas. I am hoping to get my photos loaded to my computer soon, but in the mean time, I figured I could post our xmas letter. For those of you who have seen it already, sorry about the repeat- at least the picture is in color (and is slightly different too).

Dear Family and Friends, December 2009

This year has definitely been a great year for us. Looking back, we can see our accomplishments and are thankful for the many blessings and opportunities that we have both enjoyed. Here are some of the highlights.

In April, I finished my Masters of Business Administration. With this accomplishment, I can now jokingly tease Brad that I have earned two graduate degrees while he is still working on his first. For my graduation present, Brad bought me an electric bass guitar and amp. I have enjoyed learning how to play and jamming out with some of my favorite rock songs, but I still have a lot to learn.

After finishing each of our school semesters, Brad and I were able to take a road trip after. This year, we decided to explore Chicago. We saw many of the traditional sites including the Tower formerly known as Sears, the Chicago Art Museum, and the Museum of Natural History. We also enjoyed taking a boat tour on the Chicago River and experiencing authentic Chicago deep-dish pizza and Italian beef. From Chicago, we drove to Nauvoo, IL to enjoy some of the LDS Church history sites. Despite a few minor setbacks (ask Brad if you want to know), we had a great trip.

In June, Brad began his summer internship for a law firm in Dallas, TX. He enjoyed working in a challenging environment, eating fatty Southern food daily, and wearing cowboy boots with minimal ridicule. Fortunately, I was able to visit him two times during the summer. While in Dallas together, we went for a 15-mile bike ride, enjoyed the Fourth of July fireworks in the Cotton Bowl, ate awesome Mexican food (which we don’t have in Michigan), cheered at a rodeo, swam, and barbequed. We both enjoyed our time in Dallas and are excited to return.

In August, Brad began re-focusing his efforts toward his last semester of school. During this semester, he has been finalizing his article for publication, working on cases in the legal clinic, serving on the board of the Journal of Law Reform, and preparing for the Bar Exam. Though he has been very busy, we feel confident that his hard work will pay off (and will have a few grey hairs to prove it). We are both looking forward to his graduation this month. We did it!

As for me, I am enjoying working at the University of Phoenix and teaching piano lessons. I continue to volunteer in our church’s Primary. Since my graduation, I have enjoyed having free time for leisurely reading and playing my bass.

We love you and wish you and your families Happy Holidays and a prosperous New Year.
Love, Brad and Karri Smyer

The 8th Best Burger in America

Granted, the rating came from GQ magazine (and Oprah), but we figured we'd give it a shot because after all 8th is pretty good.

I-C-E-C-R-E-A-M Ice Cream!

A couple of weeks ago, we went out to an ice cream parlor with a couple of our friends. They warned us that the servings were huge, but we were out for the challenge. Brad ordered a banana split. It came with 6 baseball sized scoops of icecream, 2 bananas, and toppings. I ordered a turtle sundae with 3 baseball sized scoops, brownies, pecans, and carmel sauce. I have to admit, it was a challenge, but we managed to eat all of that icecream! Brad was sick for a little while afterward, but thankfully, he recovered quickly while keeping all of that fattening and lactose filled icecream down. Yum!

Henry Ford Museum

We also spent a day at the Henry Ford Museum. If you are wonding about some of the pictures, my parents are making out in the back seat, the chair is the chair that Abraham Lincoln was assassinated in, the cot is George Washington's slept while fighting for our freedom, my mom and I are sitting in the seat Rosa Park refused to give up, I am an Oscar Mayer wiener. We had a day of learning, appreciation, and fun!
